'Mulching' Question

I have a great crop of purslane growning around my tomatoes. I was going to pull them but they are good for you and I thought maybe they would help keep moisture in since we are in drought.

But I'm concerned since they are succulent that they will actually pull away moisture from the tomatoes. Anybody know?

It's a good thing to have the shade, BUT it will draw moisture away. One of those things that prove, no matter what you do, it's wrong. Any plants will draw moisture, you just have to decide which plant you want more.

You might just lay some mulch, even cardboard down, even now.

I wouldn't let purslane stay without a fight. When I was just starting up, I farmed a small 3/4 acre parcel and let a lot of purslane go to seed. That plant took over the field, re-rooting after I pulled it and choked out some slower growing crops like carrots. The war lasted for years after that.
Some people like it but not me. I'd recommend clean straw as an alternative or as said above, cardboard. At least that won't take over, lol.
