Branch Fell without provocation

On a windless day at about noon a large branch fell off my maple tree. I don't know much about trees, but here are my observations: the area where the felled branch attached to the tree had a brown section, there were insects present, and other parts of the felled branch seem to break easily.
Any information is appreciated.

My guess would be winter damage. Probably Ice or snow damage had partially split the limb from the tree. Undetected the limb still partially connected leafed out hiding the damage. Brown spot is the original wound healed over. Insect where probably attracted to the open wound. What was the tipping point? Who knows. The weight of the foliage,a fat squirrel or something caused the limb to finally drop.

How do you provoke a limb? I'd like to know, maybe I can put away my pole saw. ;-)
