Japanese maple for container

Though, not hardy in my zone 3, on occassion I've seen Japanese maples grown as container specimens. Any suggestions for a upright dwarfish tree form with a rich dark red colouring? I prefer varieties with a fuller leaf, I'm not so keen on types with thread like and heavily disecceted foliage. 'Bloodgood' is often available from local nurseries, though through mail order I'm hoping to find a similar variety with a fuller and more compact form. By the way, I'd be storing the plant in a cold room for the winter. Thanks!

Terry
