Don't know for sure - the tree is big enough for a Dolgo, but the fruit look a little light-colored for that. By all means jelly and spiced crabs! I wish I had some crabapples near me for jelly, as it beats regular apple jelly by a mile. II'd swap you for some, if I could figure out how to get together with you without spending big bucks on gas!

I'm not familiar with Dolgo altho I've read that it has the best crabapples. I don't know where you live...I'm over by Harper's Ferry. If there's anyway possible, I'd be happy to share with you. I think they're still about a month from harvest. Let me know where you are and if we can work something out I will.

I know what you mean about the price of gas. When I go to the store, 6 miles away, I make sure I get everything I need because I can't justify going just to get aluminum foil or whatever.

Crabapples make TERRIFIC apple crisp, brown betty, pie, turnovers, etc. You need just a little more sugar (not much) and leave out any lemon juice called for in your favorite recipe.
Don't try to peel and core them, just slice off the meat so you have little half moons. The peels give a great color, and aren't nearly as chewy as apple skins when cooked.

Also GREAT for apple butter, and since you put that through a food mill it's no trouble at all.

Laurel, apple crisp is my favorite dessert...I'll be sure to try that. Also the crabapple butter is a great idea. Gosh, I do hate to see them go to waste....just me and the birds;) I do have another crabapple variety with much smaller apples.
