japanese maple

We live in south Louisiana. I bought a japanese maple in early spring and planted it in partial sun/shade. It is about 4 feet tall. I don't know what kind it is. It seemed to root well and was doing fine until this summer. Then the leaves turned brown and they seem to be dry. We did have a drought this summer. I may not have watered it enough. Does this seem to be the case, or do the leaves naturally turn brown? What should I do? I do not have any mulch around the base. Should I put some?
