Sweet Peas -when to direct seed in Zone 7a.

Hi. I was wondering when to direct sow sweet peas. I live on the Eastern Shore of Md and direct sowed sweet peas mid Nov. I also sowed them around the beginning of Oct. and they are about 3 inches tall. I tried direct sowing them last year on Feb. 24 and they grew but soon died out around June. Please help. Thank you.
