consequences of cutting back tamarisk now...

I have a tamarisk growing near one of my perennial beds it is leaning over and threatening to crush some plants. Can I cut this branch? It's kind of a big one; about an inch in diameter. I think if I cut this branch the others (about 3 smaller ones) will spring back up a little..

Nevermind..I had to do it or it was going to crush some delphinium and scabiosa. Hope it comes back ok next year.

Have had mine for about 10 years now. Its easily 10ft tall, and evokes alot of comments because of its' fuzzy pink blooms all summer. It sways with the slightest air current, and birds seem to like hanging around in it.
I understand it should be pruned, but I've never done it.
