Rat traps work, baited with peanut butter

If you have a Runnings or Fleet Farm Store in the area they will carry traps, poison or smoke bombs, any of which should do the job.

I have gopher problems every year and the only way I can get rid of them is with poison. I purchase fresh poison each year as the old stuff kept over winter does not seem to work after being in my unheated garage. I get it at the feed mill rather then a hardware store. Seems to be more potent. After reading the directons to see how much to use I take a 2 ft. or so steel rod and at the gopher mound there will be a slight indentation and from there about 10 inches out take your rod and poke into the ground and hopefully the 1st time you will feel the rod drop at the tunnel. It can be 6, 8. 10 or so inches from the top of the ground. Then w/o removing your rod go with it in circles to make the hole wider so you can easily drop in the correct amount of poison. I use a small piece of newpaper to cover the hole I made and then pack dirt over it so there is no light showing in their tunnel and hopefully they come to dinner. Nice thing is no little body to dispose of. You will know you got it since the gopher will no longer be making mounds. Some people do well with traps but not me. Good luck

I'm not sure if you live in the country and have the space or not. But I've heard that if you create a perimeter of hardy field grass (needs good root system) they will not tunnel through it. On our property (5 acres) we leave the outter 10-15 feet go to wild prairie grass - not planted, just wild. We've never had any gophers, although the neighboring fields do occassionally.
