We just discovered that the developer of our subdivision failed to remove an old driveway located in our front yard, next to and perpendicular to our current driveway. Instead he apparently piled up about 6-8 inches of dirt to cover it. Our grass always turns brown here long before the rest of the yard. We also have difficulty growing grass right along our driveway.

I would like to put in some plants that could tolerate the shallow soil and western exposure. Something evergreen would be nice since this is our front yard. We want to put in a planting stip along our driveway soon, so this would connect with it, basically forming an upside down "L" shape.

Ahy ideas would be great!
