Aspargus is getting too thick

We have a 10 year old bed of asparagus and some of the stalks are coming up very thick. Some are thicker than my thumb and are very "woody" and not very tasty. How do I get it to throw thinner stalks? We have tried picking it over and over trying to exhaust the plants but they still come up very thick.

Oh, how I hope someone answers this question! I have no tips whatsoever, never having succeeded with asparagus (not enough sun), but I do wish you good luck! This spring I would have killed to have your problem, even though I agree it is a knotty one. There has to be an answer to this asparagus problem. Surely you're not alone.)

Speaking with no knowledge at all, is it possible they're overfed?
