Most hardy perennialsAs can be planted as long as your still able to dig. Make sure to water a few times till the ground freezes. Bee balm can be touchy when transplanted so I don't know if I'd move it unless you had too. Same with lambs ear it takes some time to bounce back. Again, if you do move them keep them watered till the ground freezes.

Hey there Winker-
I too have a few left to get into the ground- but I learned a neat trick here a while ago- It was suggested to me to bury the pots and all without disturbing the roots when planting this late in the season. I have found I lose far fewer plants that way.
You do still need to water them untill the ground freezes- as they do not stay as moist in their pots as the surrounding open ground seems to stay- and then water again when the weather warms in the spring.
I know that is what I will be doing with the few remaining perennials I have left to get into the ground.
Although- I will still plant lilies and tulips and such- but not much past this weekend. Even they need to establish a few roots before winter really sets in.

I wouldn't worry about the bee balm. It spreads, not as badly as most mints, but will still send out surface runners if you don't trim them back. They do need a fair amount of water however.

I've got a few to get in the ground yet too. Julie, I think I'll follow your advice about the pots. I've never done that before but had been thinking about it anyway. Now that everything in the veggie garden (except maybe the brussel sprouts and (I hope) the endive) is frozen, I think I'll just dig that up and plop the pots in there.

Like Julie I have been popping plants in pots in the ground for the winter, sometimes I don't know just where I want that plant to go yet, other times I need to wait until I can move another plant in the spring to make room for the potted plant. I have had 100% survival rate. Wednesday I cleaned my veg beds and now it's full of pots. Some are plants that have been given to me others are from those great fall sales. I got two 1 gal plants from Lowes for 50 cents each.
