Hope springs eternal

Both I, who live in the woods across from a farm where deer are heavily hunted, and a friend who lives in the woods, but not close to any on-going hunting, believe we have noticed fewer deer this year.

Normally, with the deer being hunted across the road, I would be seeing 15 or 20, especially when the snow was on the ground, but the largest number I've seen together is 6.

Has anyone else noticed anything similar? Or am I just seeing the deer through rose-colored glasses?

NJTea. There's way too many deer in NJ. While I am an environmentalist ever since I can remember, we have a huge problem here in NJ.

What you may or may not be seeing is purely transitory. Until we get the deer population under control, our forests will remain in the awful condition that they currently are. Devoid of vegetation in the understory. There's no way that one is supposed to be able to see a 1/2 mile away in a mature forest.

Birdsong72, you're preaching to the choir here. I'm for wholesale shooting of the pests.

When I bought my property 8 years ago, there was a bit of a native understory - now there's nothing. The only places that have understory are those properties that are fenced - or filled with invasives.
