As I was walking the dog this afternoon, I could see something greening up down along the brook, but it was quite a distance so I couldn't tell what it was. At first I thought it might be barberry but then I saw some along the roadside that showed no sign of green. Maybe multiflora rose or honeysuckles?

Well I had to walk around the yard today and there is a lot happening! No forsythia in bloom but it is definitely time to cut them. Witch hazels are moving along and showing color. However the nicest, plumpest bunch of buds were on the ground and I am nervous I am going to have problems with the squirrels debudding my plants again this year.
Also a snowdrop galanthus nivalus is in full bud just ready to unfold - didn't notice it before. Saraccoca humilis buds are showing color. Bloody dock sent up some colorful but small leaves. Parsley,columbine, digitalis, arabis are sending up some leaves. Helleborus foetidus is budding as it does all winter and germinating as well. Petasites are sending up its buds now. Arum italicum is sending up leaves. Cyclamen hederifolium still has its leaves. Ilex verticulata Wintergold is full of berries still where Red sprite and Winter red have been picked over. Ilex serrata still has berries too - either Bonfire or Sparkleberry. And I see some roses are sending out small leaves which will probably get knocked off.
Now I am worried about the hydrangea macrophylla. If they break bud, I can forget seeing much on them this year.

Ok and a orange and purple viola! Winter is over! The new season starts.

Ok, so winter's not over but I see iris reticulata and crocus coloring up now.

Yep, I've got a crocus too!
