I'll be starting my veggies from seed for the first time this year, and I'm relying on Peggi Ballister-Howells' book "Month by Month Gardening in New Jersey".

February - start seeds indoors for onions & leeks to be set out in March.

March - start seeds indoors for broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers. Plant outdoors: sets/plants for onions, leeks, shallots; cloves/seed pieces for garlic, potatoes, sunchokes; direct seed peas, spinach.

Her chart does not show different planting dates for zones 6 and 7. Hope this helps.

I am getting ready NOW to plant leeks and parsley and wintersow some greens, lettuces and perennials outside under plastic (check out the interesting wintersow forum). Tomatoes etc will wait until march. You could probably start your broccoli and lettuce soon especially if you have a cold frame or protected area for the plants when you are ready to put them outside.

I was reading "Dick Raymond's gardening year". What a motivation. The guy has a huge veggie garden in Vermont, he routinely starts things earlier than he should, he has backup seedlings and plastic protectors if he needs them. Then in December he is out there digging snow off the garden so he can harvest some late greens. Wow.
