Keep it inside as a pot plant.....wash the leaves with water every week to keep from getting spider mites.

Yes it's a monster! Whatever you do, don't let it loose in your garden!

They grow quite well in pots inside or on a deck/patio - you can even grow them over wire frames and make them look like topary (?sp) balls and other shapes.

It won't go crazy in zone 5....too much winter die back.

All English ivy is in the Hedera genus, helix is the species & there are hundreds, if not thousands, of varieties (or cultivars, if you prefer) of Hedera helix. They are very nice outdoors in a pot where they appreciate shade from at least the midday sun & evenly moist & rich soil. They like a fertilizer with high nitrogen in summer & you can solve the common winter mite problem by overwintering in an attached garage. Linda is right about dieback in zone 5 where it is marginally hardy.

I'm a rookie plant owner and I bought one of these at a hardware store. I have it as an indoor in a medium size pot. It was getting quite large (must be an easy keeper) so I just cut the stems back to about a foot or so and I keep it on my (quite small) kitchen counter in a corner. I think it's a nice look.

I have mine planted under a tree that gets morning sun and afternoon shade and seems to be doing nicely. Hasn't become a monster ......yet??? It's climbed up the trunk a little bit but not badly. Also have one by my water pond in full sun and is not doing so well. Hasn't really grown much, thinking of transplanting it soon.

It won't be a monster unless it gets its feet on the ground. ;o)
