The tall grass is annual rye often used as a shade crop....the stuff that's growing horizontally is crab grass.....get it out of there....and the sort textured stuff appears to be blue grass....but not nearly enough of it!
Thye plant looks sort of like an euonomys of some sort.....but probably not a planned part of the landscaping!

Excellent. Thanks for the information. Will the annual rye grass just die away and leave us with the finer, softer grass? The coarseness of the annual rye right now is pretty unpleasant, but if it is just going to die away after it's served its purpose, that's great.

If the lawn is new you may need to set your mower higher because the individual grass plants won't have had time to 'tiller' - put out a mat of roots and shoots to recover from your version of 'close grazing'. This can leave open patches in the sward and a place for passing seeds to settle.

For the annual rye grass: they're more likely to die out of the sward if they don't get the chance to flower/set seed. That means routine mowing to remove such ventures by the plants.

May I suggest that you post this on the Lawn Forum? I also suspect that your parent are going to want to ask around for the names of a highly recommened lawn service. Builders should NEVER be allowed to do any grass seeding or landscaping on new homes.

The plant isn't a euonymous as they don't have flowers of that color. May well be a weed.

Re the "lawn." Sheesh! What a euphemism that is! No way way can that be considered a lawn. Get thee to a reliable turf retailer and start over.

As re that flowering plant, look up scarlet pimpernel. It's a weed.

But aren't all flowers weeds to begin with? LOL If it were me I'd let the orange 'weeds' take over the 'lawn'.. LOL Looks like it would be a nice ground cover... But that's just my opinion... Have fun getting rid of the crab grass...

A weed is a plant out of place. If you want it, great; if you don't, get rid of it.
