I don't think I've ever read such a rude & uncalled for diatribe in response to a post.

A 150' long hedge really is quite a big hedge, either to maintain or to remove.

*If it were mine*, I think I'd let it grow as tall as it wanted, eliminating my maintenance chore, & I'd add a fence for the dog on the far side of the hedge if property lines allowed, inside the hedge if I had to.

If you take this approach, you can always come back later & remove the hedge if this just doesn't work.
If you remove the hedge first & then discover that it leaves your private garden area exposed to passersby (or to something you don't like, such as the neighbor's hottub/car sitting on blocks/bedroom window!), it'd be too late.

I know someone who'll give you a helping hand removing that hedge and replacing it with a fence. She is a lovely girl really helpful and wont ask for much in return.
