Often if you spray your plants as the sun comes you can limit damage, especially if it is a light frost. You could even consider running a sprinkler overnight.

The other common method is covering, putting old sheets over plants. This is a very effective method, the best method. All this applies to tender plants and non tender plants just planted out, which haven't had time to harden off.

All bets are off if the temperature falls into the 20s. Covering will sometimes save plants, as long as the freeze isn't prolonged. Many late freezes are only an hour or less in duration, frosts by their nature almost always so.

I don't plant too many tender things outside until about mid May, although I've put in tomatoes in mid April some years. Most things just get repotted in larger pots and set near the garage - there'll 150 or so going into the garage tonight.

I took alot into a unheated type garage. Some have milk jugs filled with water sitting around them with a empty milk jug on top with a blanket. Tomatoes plants are inside tonight in the unheated garage.
