Chrysanthemum conundrum

I've been having absolutely no luck with my chrysanthemums. I've got about 20 planted in various sunny parts of my yard, and a couple in pots, and they just won't flower! They all had lots of flowers when I bought them, and I diligently deadheaded when they died, in hopes of more flowers, but I haven't had a flower in weeks. Just now I'm starting to see buds, but I wish I knew what I'm doing wrong. I don't think it's the soil, because this is happening in spots all over my yard, in places where I've successfully grown other plants all summer. Should I not have deadheaded them? Does anyone have any advice for me? Thanks in advance.
