I seed my cabbage broccoli and cauliflower on July first you can still seed them by late July. I transplant them into 2" cell trays and plant them in the field within 5 weeks of seeding, usually by late August or as late as Labor day. Broccoli is usually ready to pick by late October up to Thanksgiving. Cabbage in the fall usually does not make good heads until November and Cauliflower if its the early type will be pickable by mid October. We seed all types of lettuce around August first. Fairton is the best head lettuce for fall in NJ....Bob.

KK I have not grow Fairton in a few years but found out it was reintroduced under the name Cannon. I don't know who sells it. A very good alternative is Maverick sold by Stokes seeds, you can order from the catalog or pick it up in their store in Vineland. I prefer to grow the romaine types since head lettuce often bolts in our unpredictable weather... Bob.

Right now I'm growing red oak leaf all through summer. It's doing fine and tasting good. Lettuce (especially cut) is very fast maturing so sow (winter/fall types) a few weeks before you would like to harvest. I'd say most fall lettuces could be sown beginning (very beginning) of September and then every few weeks untill deep freeze. :)

I grew a "Lettuce Bowl" this spring to place on my deck. It came out fantastic! Now that the plants are turning to seed, I would like to replant lettuce varieties for the fall. Why am I having such a hard time finding fall lettuce seeds or even plants? Does anyone have any suggestions?
I was able to find Green Towers and Endive only! HELP!
