Was it a red kale? There are ornamental as well as tasty kales. Here's some edible ones.

Do a search on the internet. They are sometimes called ornamental cabbage or ornamental kale. May also be referred to as flowering cabbage or flowering kale (though they aren't really referring to the flowers on the plant, just the bright leaf colorations that usually develop in cool weather and late summer/autumn.)
