Best way to overwinter shrubs

I have 2 potted Knockout Roses and 1 mini Rhododendron in pots. We are expecting a frost this weekend. What is the best way to protect them in winter? Keep them in pots and bury pots in ground? Take them out and wrap in burlap and plant? or store inside the house all winter?

Ok...I figured that, I just needed confirmation. Are leaves a good mulch to pile up around them?

" Are leaves a good mulch to pile up around them?"

Maybe and maybe not.
I don't like piling mulch because it harbors rodents, moles voles - you name it - which will girdle the stock as they gnaw and that'll kill any plant.
