Anyone doing winter protection this year?

So now that fall is here, and remembering our last harsh winter, is anyone else approaching this winter differently? I am in process of winter protecting a hydrangea that suffered winter kill of buds last winter and didn't bloom. I'm making a cage around it and stuffing with dry leaves. Anyone have success with this?

Trying to be realistic, I probably won't do any more than usual: covering all beds with a 2-4" mulch of shredded oak leaves. Everything came through last winter very well, with the exception of several hydrangeas and the fig tree (unwrapped), all of which grew back from the roots.

Hydrangeas 'Limelight', 'Lady in Red' and the climbing hydrangea all bloomed more prolifically this year than ever, as did the lilac and tree peony.

I'm more concerned about signs of Asian ambrosia beetle in some of the fig trunks than I am about the cold.

I am planting azaleas and a lilac, last year I didn't do anything with my rose or lilac (first time home owner and garden owner) by this year I am thinking of putting 2-4 inches of compos around the lilacs and rose, and wood mulch around azaleas
