Sum & Substance division

I bought 2 sum & substance bareroot plant divisions from Michigan bulbs online (during the winter months) and when it arrived I planted them, both bareroots are growing slowly but my question is ...are the sum & substance leave supposed to be thin and pointy when they are young? Do they get the big round shape as they get older? I have a feeling that I just got the wrong plants but I want to be sure since I know that sum & substance do take a few years to get larger. If anyone has experience in this area I sure would appreciate your input. Thanks!

I suspected that may be the case, as I say some young divisions at a local nursery that already have the shaped leaf that I expected. I won't be ordering from them again, I have not had good luck with the quality of their plants.

I have the same problem with S&S.Long pointy leaves, not round as should be. I orderd them from Bluestone Perinnials in Ohio. They weren't that cheap, but they are not the plant I ordered.I won't order from them again either. Judy

there are reasons we recommend using one of the preferred HOSTA sellers ...

you really dont go to a chicken joint.. and hope for good seafood do you ...

or complain the fish isnt really good at a rib shack ... eh .. lol ..

pay a bit extra and get guaranteed hosta.. at some place like the link below

    Hi,

When Sum and Substance is young or when they are sending out a new flush of fast growing foliage, yes, the leaves can be somewhat elongated. The picture above looks like a younger Sum and Substance, just needs some more growing time to start to get more rounded leaves.

To the original poster, if yours is a totally different color from the picture above then it still might be wrong.

    Hope that helps.

Just a comment about Bluestone Perennials. They are not hosta specialists but they are quality all the way. Dave's Garden Watchdog has them always listed in their top 30. I've ordered from them myself and have nothing but good to say about them.

I was relieved when Chris confirmed that the pic above did look like a young Sum and Substance.

I ordered a Guacamole from Bluestone at the end of the 2007 growing season (was on sale), and was in a small 2 1/2" pot, one eye. Very small. This year, if I remember correctly, it came up with eighteen eyes and is about four feet across. I know Guacamole is a fast grower, but dang! And the flowers smell so nice! I see it sported an all green eye, perhaps two, that'll be separated once I get ready to move it before the garage demo and replant once the new garage is finished. Point being, one must be patient with Bluestone's hostas, they are small, but they do grow. But, if you want bigger plants, go with Hallson's.

schoolb1, thank you for posting that picture, that's exactly what my hostas look like. thank you chris for identifying it, I feel much better now, I was going to replace the plants with ones from a local nursery ( I still may buy one just because it's larger) I have to say that I also have bought from Bluestone perrenials and love how they ship their plants, and the quality is good too. I'm about to order some more (agastache's are in season) I'll be keeping my eyes on the hostas but feel better now!! thanks so much!!

i have heard a lot of good things about bluestone..

but i would still suggest you support our prime enablers ... if we dont.. they will continue to disappear .... and without the places that sell 100's of different hosta.. we are going to be limited to the 10 or 20 a place like bluestone offers ...

BUY HOSTA FROM HOSTA DEALERS ....

sorry this isn't the best picture...i don't feel like taking one..uploading it and such.... the top of the picture is a division from Naylor Creek I bought this year... I forget but it was under ten bucks...I've got it staked up atm due to the massive leaves... If I remember correctly it was two or three eyes...just as a division its beautiful....I'm in no way affiliated with Naylor Creek or Hallson's Gardens! I've only been collecting this season... but have purchased from random sellers on ebay, amazon, other Hosta retailers online...NC and Hallson's are gonna provide most of my Hostas from here on out =)
    Thanks

I bought mine from Bridgewood at http://bridgewoodgardens.com/?gclid=CP6e07eetaQCFVvW5wod4hPxMQ. They had a sale and the plants were in superb condition. Did not realize 10 years to maturity though...
