79f spring is here!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least most of this week. Has me finishing up my seed ordering and checking supplies one last time. Between Diane and Dawn mentioning sites like Native Seeds now I've went and ordered more and redoing lists. LOL. I will plant celery this week. I know we will have some more cold but want to take advantage of this nice break. Hope everyone is enjoying the great weather we are having. Jay

It was only 74 degrees here today, but it sure felt like spring. I love the February thaw, but am sure the cold isn't completely finished with us yet. I do intend to enjoy every warm, sunny moment. We saw a moth outside just after sunset, and the bunnies were out hopping around the yard. I think every living creature was outside enjoying the beautiful day and evening.

If you need to order more seeds, I can think up another seed company to link!

Extreme temperatures are the norm for you out there in the land of no trees!

I think we got to about 60 or a little more here.

Up here in the land of snow, I read you title and wondered what the heck 79f was. It never occurred to me that could be the temp. It was pretty nice here if you don't mind mud, and 9 or 10 inches of snow (or glacier ice).

I wanted to plant some things last night and couldn't locate everything I needed, and didn't want to walk through the snow to go find it. I planted a few tomato seed, but I think it is time to get serious on several things.

    Have you planted celery yet?

    Carol,
I just got my celery seeds in Friday and Saturday. Meant to plant today but didn't. Will over the next couple of days. I'm hoping that we may have a more normal last freeze date this year and not the extremely late dates we've seen the last 3 years. Going to start some early and then some a few weeks later. So will have back ups in case. Don't want all of my eggs in one basket. The first tomatoes I start will be those I plan to experiment with the grafting on. That way if I kill all of them or set them back some there will still be time to salvage the season.

Scott all of OK and most of KS especially the SW corner can see extremes but I feel that over a whole year we see more than most. Also the wind currents created by the mountains influence our weather and temps a lot more than many realize. As you get further east their influence diminishes.

I've learned to enjoy and appreciate each day as you never know what tomorrow will bring here. Jay

Where did that OK Garden web map go? I need to look at in again when I am reading this post. It was nice here but I don't think it was anywhere near mid seventies.

Is the snow over for the year? Please say yes.

Jo in my opinion no. At least for us. If we are going to get any moisture in late winter and early spring there is a chance at least part of it will fall in the form of snow. The good part is that it usually warms up faster afterwards and it doesn't stay around too long. The later snows are also usually wetter. The problem is the blowing and drifting. Every week we go now the warmer the lows at night should be even with a cold front. I would have to do a little research of my records but can't remember any lows after March 1st below zero and very few in the single digits. So that helps also. The trees look more normal this year and not ready to bud and leaf out like the last few. So hoping for a normal spring where our last frost in around the April 16th date. Which is our average. I would like for an early April last frost date. Like I've said elsewhere I feel it will be so will be starting a few plants early just in case. Jay

    Jo,

Are you talking about the map where a lot of us plugged in our location last year or just one of the OK Mesonet temperature maps?

No one can honestly say the snow is over for the year with any certainty, but we can say "yes" hoping it is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Last year a lot of us had snow on the first day of spring in late March, and I know I've seen snow fall in both southern OK and northcentral Texas even in April. I sure hope we've seen the end of it for this year.

This week's weather is the standard February thaw, though, and there certainly will be more cold weather, including freezing temperatures, ahead.

Scott, heehee haha - the land of no trees!

Speaking of which I need to peruse the back yard to see what is poking it's head up. I hope the Hellebores are doing okay.....

We just heard geese fly over this morning, so that's a good sign.

joellen - Jay lives in Kansas just above the OK panhandle.

I live near Grove which is in the north east corner of Oklahoma, and Missouri is directly east of me.

Yes, I was talking about the map where the members here plugged in their locations. It always helps me to get a visual when different members start talking about the BIG differences they have in temps etc.

Thanks soonergranmom, that was helpful :) >

    So not fair! *sob*

Here I was feeling all special because it's in the 40s and I have all of the windows open.... The snow is melting and the entire yard is soup so not much I can do out there at the moment. It's still nice to see the sun and patches of grass!

    Jo,

I've linked Boomer's Mapme OK Forum map below.

Mapme is sort of goofy. It shows the little marker thing about where I am, but it lists me as being in Whitesboro, TX, which is incorrect. Still, the map will show you where everyone who participated is/was located when the map was made. It seems like Diane had trouble with it too as it kept making her show up somewhere other than where she actually lived, but she "fixed" that my moving to a whole new state.
