I tried red hot pokers one year but never got them to bloom before the frost hit. They didn't winter over.

I saw them standing 6' in Scotland and was quite impressed with them ... but alas .... our winters in Northwestern Ontario are just too cold and our summers too short, I think.

I've had Red Hot Poker for years. Some over winter, a few don't. They are easy to grow from seed & I've had them bloom the same year. Yours will probably bloom next year. The soil I have them planted in is rather thin....more sand than anything else. They don't like to stand in water.

I'm a zone 3 in Central Oregon and planted Kniphofia Uvaria Flamenco pokers last sumemr and they bloomed and made it through my winter here. Not blooming yet but with our goofy weather so far this summer everything is behind. I was amazed that by me being good about deadheading (not always am I) them they bloomed all summer until fall freeze.

I need help in why the poker bloom doesn't last long about a week. I've tried different fertalizers but no help. They spread and bloom each year. Mine came from Va. I live in SC

I live in Dallas and have had the plant for two years now. With my second year of growing, there are more pokers than last year. Mine grow fine in part sun, part shade. I can't wait to see how many red pokers will appear this year....they are just starting to appear. It's one of my favorite plants.

HELP... From a distance, I appear to have a couple of Red Hot Pokers in my garden, closer inspection and comparison, the flowers are berry shaped and not tubular, as depicted in all the web-images I've found. What have I got?

Larry Baruch, those are fruits, rather than flowers, most probably from some type of arum. If you post the photo on the Name that Plant forum, you will probably get an ID. Be sure to add generally where you are.
