Crazy onion question...

...since I have been off the board for a while (especially, it seems, at very strategic times!)...I missed the whole onion ordering thing, SO....

IF I were to plant onions (and soon, I know)...I know Intermediate day types...what variety do you recommend that I could pick up either at Horn's or TLC or somewhere? I probably wouldn't plant more than about a dozen or two, tops.

I need to get my (gardening) rear in gear it seems....sigh..!

I have planted both intermediate and short day varieties, please look at the Dixondale website for the recommendations

I saw plenty of Dixondale onions sets at Atwoods of Norman, but most of the plants seems to weak or dried out... you can get some health bunches. -Chandra

Sharon - TLC on NW Expressway had 1015's, White/Yellow granex and Red Creole, i believe.

If i were you and only planting a dozen or so, i would go w/ the 1015's...one or two bunches.

    Sharon,

Any onions sold in the OKC area as plants (not as bulb-like sets) should be either short-day or intermgediate day types and would do fine if planted by you this week. If you are planting next week or later, I'd use only intermediate types because they'll be able to grow a few weeks longer than short-day types.

I second Okiehusker's recommendation of Texas 1015Y onions, which also are referred to sometimes as Texas Supersweets. They are a terrific onion and are very reliable. We really like Candy onion too.

Awesome...thanks! I think that Horn's has sold the 1015s before, so I'll go look there...and for the Candy onions, too! I can get my potatoes at the same time :~)

Spencer's grocery in Blanchard has a good supply of Dixondale 1015s. Saw them there today and they are $1.29 per bunch. I got my shipment from the group set out last Sunday and ran out before the row that I prepared was finished. I made a quick trip up to Atwoods and all 1015s were gone but they did have some sweet reds. I got 2 bunches of them for a buck a bunch and got back to get them set out. It was Tuesday before I could get them watered and the last ones from Atwoods looked like they were toast. The shipment onions were hurt but with water they did perk up some. Now to wait and watch and hope that they survive. Everything else in the yard is budding out and with what is promised for the weekend,I am afraid we are going to lose the fruit harvest. I did lose a lot of plants with the extreme cold earlier this year. You just never know from year to year.

I'm behind on onions, too, Sharon - bunching onions, that is. Do you know if they sell any red bunching onion varieties locally?

I did get a bunch of Dixondale 1015s at Horn's for $1.99...they had Candy for $3.99/bunch, and 2 or 3 other varieties in bunches - various prices; sorry I can't remember what they were though. I also saw shallots and elephant garlic, and little bulb onions. Friday's my day to get mine planted, as well as my potatoes and salad greens!

I planted potatoes and onions yesterday, but soil is still too wet. We are expecting rain so thought I would get them in now or be forced to wait till June.

My cover corp really has me messed up. This is the third time I have had a cover crop and each time it has caused my soil to stay wet way too long. I live in a wet low area and by the time my soil is dry enough to plant it is too late to get a harvest before hot dry weather, but I am not ready to give up.

My soil was so very dry, but I got the onions and potatoes and lettuce planted....:~(
I had torn down a shed and emptied a couple of compost bins into a large pile; that compost had not done a thing since last fall because of the drought here...I'm really praying for some rain this spring!
