Hope you own the woods you pulled it from, taking plants from land you do not own is theft.

What kind of maple and how small? Wild grown saplings do not like to be transplanted and there may not be enough room for roots in the container.

Its hard to overwinter trees in pots in an Ontario winter. You will need to half bury the container in the ground and cover it well with straw or mulch or the the tree will freeze and die over winter. It would be better to plant it in the garden now.

Either plant it in it's permanent spot now or pot it up.

If you pot it up, just sink the pot into the ground/garden for winter to insulate the roots. Mulch wouldn't hurt, neither would nice fluffy snow placed over it.

My nephew found a maple growing in the garden at my parents (this was boxelder, Manitoba Maple). He potted it up and forgot about it and it survived the winter in the little pot behind the shed. Though, probably best to sink the pot into the ground for winter.

Today I picked out one of the many Silver Maple trees growing in my
mulch so I could grow one in a small to medium sized pot. The tree is
only about 3 to 4" tall and has about 4 or 5 leaves growing on it. I
placed the little tree in the pot with potting soil and top soil. I am
planing on growing it outside with partial shade to full sun. So what
do I need to do in order for this tree to grow well and be properly
cared for?
