Light Meter

My husband picked up a Mosser Lee Soil Master from Lowe's because I told him I wanted something to measure the light in the garden, but am I wrong or does this only measure the light *intensity* at a specific moment rather than light exposure throughout the day? I wanted to know if the site I imagined for the veggie garden would get enough light. I have tried eyeballing it every hour to couple of hours throughout the day, and my best guess would be that the spot (4-5 ft. x 8-10 ft.) gets around 4 hours, so I wanted something more accurate. Is this thing useless for that purpose, and if so, any suggestions?
