The fact that half of the plant has died suggests it is not very happy. I find this orchid grows best on a plaque. If you can't get tree fern, a piece of bark will do, just tie it on and it will do the rest. You can wrap a very little sphagnum moss around the roots if you like. If it is already used I like to sterilize it first by zapping it in the microwave for 1-2 minutes (depending on the amount). To water, leave it in a bucket of water for a couple of hours once a week. I would think it will need more light than African violets. It is quite happy with a couple of hours a day of direct sunlight, morning and/or evening. Good luck - Ian.
