I've always liked the flowers of this species, and ordered this one a year ago from Oak Hill. Because the plant they sent was so massive, I suspect it was actually a division and not a seedling. First flowering for me -- the blooms are large and slightly fragrant...although not necessarily a pleasant one.

Leaves tend to look discolored after a few weeks, and some drop during the winter. Bark is not my favorite medium, although it's probably a good choice for this plant given I can be warm and dry. If I used sphagnum, the styrofoam peanuts I'd need in the bottom of the pot for drainage would mean less overall volume of medium in the pot. This guy gets large!

There's a spontaneous keiki growing in the center of the larger pseudobulbs. I tried digging it out last year, but gave up because I'd end up destroying it.

I've seen large specimens at orchid shows, and they are nothing short of spectacular!
