If it's fertilizer you want then Soybean meal is a very cost effective organic fertilizer. If you wanted corn meal for it's anti fungal disease properties, then cracked corn is equally effective. You will have a few corn plants growing where it's spread. Not a problem however.

For fertilizing purposes my first choice would be Soybean Meal, second alfalfa pellets, or a combination of both.

In my area soy bean meal is prohibitively expensive at $40 for 50 pounds. Corn meal is the cheapest and second is alfalfa pellets.

not sure where in South Jersey you are, but they have cracked corn, as well as Corn Gluten, at the feed store in Woodstown. They also have soybean meal.

Your choice needs to be made based on what is available locally. Any ground up grain, nut, bean, or seed is good. Used coffee grounds (free from Starbucks) have about the same properties as corn meal. It might even have the same anti fungal properties. At least the mushroom growers of America seem to think so.

For the future, Gardens Alive sells a corn meal gluten product called WOW for the lawn. It's an on-line company.

i had the same problem. so i was wondering, does anybody know if you can use masa (corn flour) instead of cornmeal? i need it for the anti-fungal thing, not fertilizing.

You can use masa but preferably not tortilla mix. Masa is straight corn. The mix has baking soda and other stuff in it.
