HI! I just ordered some seeds from Park's Seed CO. I hope I will recieves the seeds in two weeks. I am supposed to planting veg/flowers/herbs seeds on Feburary 12th. I have already processing with my daylily seeds. Most seeds are sprouting in damp paper towel. I will plant sprouted daylilies seeds in 20 oz. styrofoam cups with good soil and sitting underlight this weekend.

Last year was my first attempt at daylily seeds. When the plants were a nice size, planted them in the garden. Hope to see some blooms this year. They were just seeds I gathered from my plants....no special crosses or anything. I have two rows about 20 feet long of daylily plants.

I never start my peppers or tomatoes until mid March.

Daylilly seeds must take some patience. how many seasons before they bloom? i can hardly stand waiting for this Spring. I have thought about starting my leafy veggies in a week or so. I have some spinach and mescline that will grow early. I'm also waiting on the finishing touches to my sunroom. Right now my house is so dark I can't grow anything inside. most of my windows face north. DOH

gldno1- does that mean you don't plant outside till mid may?

William, yes, that means I never plant my warm weather plants like peppers, tomatoes, etc., until around May 10th. I don't want to have to redo the planting due to late frosts. That just means warm weather things.

roxann, I have been mostly on a new farming forum, but since this one has revived have been here pretty regularly.

I have hopes for the garden this year since we have had lots of winter moisture. Of course, a lot was in the form of ice which I can do without!

The chicks are doing just great. I am getting between 6 and 8 each day from just 10 hens, three of which are banties. We are really enjoying the fresh eggs. I do have a killer rooster which will have to go.

I have several flats of seedlings growing in my greenhouse. This is my first year with the greenhouse and guess what? It soared to 100 degrees in there today. Yeah, several of my seedlings were fried. Oh well, back to sowing.

If i had a good place to grow them i'd try daylilly seeds. Sounds like so much fun to see what kind of flower you'd get.

I have two rows planted out in the garden from daylily seeds I raised season before last. I just collected seeds from my plants, no fancy crossing. I hope they bloom this year. I started them at the end of the season just as I collected them and grew them under lights until the next spring when I planted them out in rows. They grew well last year and several developed a few fans. Be fun to see what I get.

Vickie, I have a small 6x8 greenhouse so I should have known it would heat up quick. I have the door open today and all the vents up

I started Lettuce Leaf Basil, Balsm 2kinds, Bachlors Buttons 2kinds, Dill and amaranth last night. Yippee!

My seeds finally came today, so tomorrow I will plant snaps, onion seed and a few other flower seeds.

Today, finally, I planted my onions, Mediterranean vinca, a new dark purple petunia 'Alderman', snaps, salvia farinacea 'Evolution' (new this year)and a will do a few more tomorrow to get caught up.

I haven't posted because I know I won't remember everything. lol Glad you finally got your seed order Gld. Did you get yours Deafblossom?
I winter sowed some of my seeds around the end of January and some in mid February and found my first little sprouts this morning from Verbena Bonariensis that I planted for my butterfly garden. It's officially spring for me. : )

I also planted Garlic Chives, Ironweed, Purple Poppy Mallow, Foxglove 'Candy Mountain', Agastache 'Apricot Sprite', asclepias syriaca (common milkweed), Joe Pye Weed, Paw Paw, heuchera, and some mystery shrub seeds. I still have some more to plant. I need to set aside some time to do that next week. I can't believe it's almost March.

Gld - How did you do your salvia? That's one that I was unsuccessful with in the past. I have a few to plant that I saved from greggi, guaranitica, and darcyi and going to try winter sowing again. I made the mistake of covering the seeds last time and I don't think they like that. I'm not sure though. I bought some vermiculite and may sprinkle a little of that over them.

I moisten my mix first, put it in flats or containers; sow seed; cover. Then I cover the flat with plastic and put under lights at around 70° temp. Bottom heat would be good, but I just use the heat from the lights. When they begin sprouting, I remove the plastic cover. I always water the flats from the bottom too.

I planted some Imperial Pink poppy seeds yesterday. I wanted to do something outside again today but undone housework screamed at me so worked inside. I forgot i had tables under all that junk i'd piled up.LOL

vickie, did you plant them in flats or just broadcast them where you wanted them? I have about a cupful of Lauren's Grape poppy and the others I bought this year and wondered about just broadcasting. I do know I always loose a lot when I transplant because of the taproot.

to transplant them before without much luck too.
My free seeds were Cosmos. I've never grown them before. Can i just broadcast these seeds too?

Vickie, when I plant cosmos outside, I wait until it warms up more and then make a very shallow furrow and lightly cover the seed, about like you would do with zinnias.

I have had bad luck with petunia seeds. They are so small. What method do you use to ensure germination? James

James, some of my petunias are already sprouting. I planted them 4 days ago. I moisten my potting soil in a large bucket just until it is moist, not dripping wet. Fill container with soil, tap on table to settle, gently press down to level soil.
Sprinkle seed as sparingly as possible on soil....do not cover.
Cover pot with plastic; place under lights. If you can give them bottom heat, that is good also. I know under the lights it gets around 80° at top of container. They require 70 to 75° for germination.

I started my salvias this week, guaranitica, darcyi, Cherry Queen and Yvonne's and also some false red yucca. I waited for warmer weather for the salvias and now it's going to get cold again, so maybe I should've waited a little longer. It's supposed to get down to 19 one night.
I have winter sown cosmos before but the direct sowed ones seem to do better. I didn't get any volunteers last year and only had a couple the year before that, so I've got a couple kinds to plant this year to start them again.

Had to go buy more potting soil. I still have several things I'd like to start before it's too late. Spring will zip by. I need to get moving.

Hello everyone! I am so excitied to read this post because I loved to starts grow seeds indoor and sit underlight! I think it is so fun doing it. Yes.. I had good luck with my daylilies seeds. I got those seeds last year and keep daylilies seeds in box and stored in ice box for a year! Then.. I wrapped seeds in damped loose paper towels and put them back in ziplock bags with named crossed. Then I put the ziplock bags in big plastic peanut butter jar and sitting on top of water heat tank until they sprouted. It takes one to two weeks. Depends on seeds! Then I planted sprouted seeds in good soil in 16oz. foam cups and sitting underlight. There is several different way to start grow daylily seeds. I got some daylily seeds from my girl friend who crossed her daylilies in AL.

Hey James!!! Yes.. Yes.. the petunia seeds are soo tiny seeds. DO NOT COVER SOIL! Just try easy shake petunia seeds out of package and sit on top of Jiffy-7 and spray with warm water and then put Jiffy-7 in the tupperware lid and then sit on heating mat until sprouted. I planted Jiffy-7 in 16oz foam cups and sit underlight. I ordered Petunia Dolcissima Flambe from Park's Seed Co. I wish I know how to post pictures of babies. James..Can I send you email (pictures of babies) and you can post picture to show guys on the thread?

Christie! Yes.. I ordered seeds and then recieved those seeds in few days! I was so surprised how fast they send me seeds. Now they are fat so babies!
