I don't know about the alfalfa, but I would think you'd want to start applying it since it takes time for the N to become available to the grass.

As for the UCG, your lawn will smell like coffee as soon as you put the grounds down. The rain will actually lessen the smell, since it will take more of it into the soil. The smell doesn't bother me, and some people (even non coffee drinkers) have told me they like the way it smells, but my wife doesn't like the smell when it heats up, so I only put them down int he spring and fall.

I've been using alfalfa pellets, SBM, and cracked corn for 2 years now on my lawn. My grass greened up much faster than most every one here in town! So stick with it!! I put down CGM about a week ago. Will put down more (or alfalfa pellets, can't decide which) around Memorial Day. I work at a coffee shop and take all the coffee grounds. I usually hand cast them out on the lawn or put them in my compost pile. I never smell the UCG once they're on the lawn.
