Old-fashioned rotary edger

I'm trying to give up using a string-trimmer both for "green" reasons and for the fact that I've broken three of them in the past five years.

When I was a kid, my dad used lawn tool with rotating spikes on one edge to edge the lawn - it was kind of like a human-powered reel mower that had been sliced in half? Do they still make these tools? I can't find them anywhere.

Also, I noticed that several garden supply companies carry long-handled grass shears that you can use standing up. Do any of you have any experience with these? Would they do the trick?

Thanks for any help you can provide!
