For the first mowing I went as low as the reel mower can go, which I think is 1/2 an inch. But I'm raising it a tad to around 3/4 of a inch.

What kind of grass is it? Unless it is bermuda, bentgrass, zoysia, or centipede, I would suggest raising the mower to at least 2.5 inches and possibly all the way to 4 inches depending on your answer to the question. Since it is growing over the sidewalk it must be Kentucky bluegrass, bermuda, bent, or zoysia.

In that case it looks very good. Thanks for posting. I especially appreciate that you have not felt the need to top dress with "a little" topsoil every year. I'm fixing to go take pictures of yards where topdressing has gotten out of control.

I am a little surprised at how good it looks under the shade of your tree. Is it a little thinner back there?
