Absolutely, and by removing those leaves from that dump site you will be doing your environment a good deed and will help prevent the pollution that can come from such a storage facility.

Just realize that the leaves are organic and will disappear over time. If you're amending soil and using that soil to fill a hole or depression, you'll soon start seeing the hole or depression again as the leaves decompose. If you're using it as a top dressing or mulch (as I do), I think it's a great product. Arlington County, VA gives it away for free - it's still "hot" when delivered or I pick it up at the county yard, so just be aware if you're spreading it near trunks or shallow rooted (azalea's) shrubs and plants.

When I spread some on my lawn, it was labor intensive, but not back breaking. For compost, others recommend using a push broom. I didn't have one at the time, so I just picked it up a handful at a time and rubbed my hands together to remove any lumps and let it float down.

Let us know how it turns out. As a follow-up question - is the microbial / fungal content different in a leaf compost vs. a "regular" compost you'd get from a nursery or municipality?

Thanks for the replies. Ours is free as well from the local compost site, just have to shovel it. It is already broken down into black compost(?). I would like to spread some over my lawn in the fall and reseed but currently I would like to seed an area where the soil is poor and I didn't know if i should put top soil and composted manure or top soil, composted manure AND the leaf compost. P.S. I'd much rather deal with just planting flowers in my yard but I'm a single woman and have to do the lawn thing too!
