What kind of fescue? Fine fescue or tall fescue?

If it's fine fescue, you can kill it with too much N, even if it all comes from UCG.

Any suggestions on how best to improve the soil when the grass is fine fescue? I have a long way to go to get "good" soil, so was hoping to heavily use organics on my shady, fine fescue area too.

Compost is a good way to improve your soil, applying not more than 1/2 inch at a time and usually much less expensive then the Corn Glutten Meal or cracked corn.
The only way bgtimber75 will know if too much Nitrogen is being applied is with a good, reliable soil test.

I should have been more clear. It's possible to add too much N using UCG, but it would take A LOT. You could probably add about 100 lbs per 1000 sq ft per year and have room for error.

Thanks for checking back. I don't think I'm going to get anywhere close to that much.

I use corn meal almost exclusively at about 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet times 5 applications per year. The only time I stray from basic corn is when I get an excellent deal on something else or, sometimes when I'm feeling frisky. My lawn is noticeably darker in color than most other lawns on the street.

What type of grass to you have dchall?
