Rules of thumb are just that: generalizations. If you have a heavy soil and you put down an inch of water everyday you will end up with a hardpan under the sod. A sandy soil will drain and dry quicker.

Keep the sod moist every morning and if it get real hot in the afternoon with the sun beating down on short grass blades you may want to freshen it up at that time.

As the blades grow they protect the shallow root zone a little better every day. After a week or so you can skip a day (a cool cloudy day) and let the new root growth go into the soil.

As you grab the handful of grass and pull up gently and you feel areas are starting to 'grab hold' you can back off your current watering schedule. Your watering schedule was determined by what the soil texture is and how long it stayed wet.

When you first mow, mow high. Schedule every other day watering after that, generally. Monitoring you water needs as each day passes is what works best.
