The garage, week two...

Oh My! What a mess I made in the garage. This past Tuesday I was almost finished with my organization and storing of all the garden pots, containers, hand tools and dirt when...a shelf on the back wall of the garage which held several items, including hanging baskets, came crashing down, landing in a tangled heap on the table below. I just stood there, watching it happen, helpless. And I swear...it happened in slow motion. What a mess. I just stood there. As soon as I was sure that all had settled and nothing more was left to fall, I just walked away, back into the house, closing the garage door behind me.

But, as always happens, today was a new day. I found a new shelf bracket, cleared the rubble from the table, stood on said table and installed the new shelf. After a few hours of hard work, order has been restored. All pots, dirt, hand tools have been stowed. I even have 3 of the 4 garden hoses put away. I still have a few pots with impatients in full bloom outside but those are plastic pots that stay out all year. I still have a few, small items in need of a spot but by this time tomorrow, I should have space for my car! Yippie-Skippie!

Oh, and one more thing. And I must say, I am very proud of myself for this...I remembered to put the humming bird feeders on top of the 'pile', in easy reach. This means that come spring of '09, I will not have to go to the Bird Watchers Store to buy yet another Hummingbird feeder because...I remembered to think ahead during the great fall clean-up of '08. Mission accomplished!

Tomorrow will be day 4 in the garage. When complete it will be a thing of beauty.

Four days! Have you considered building a new garage? Or a second story for all the garden stuff? Or take a lesson from the voles and moles and make a tunnel underneath the garden, all the better to fill up with stuff....

Good thought about the hummingbird feeders - I just finished cleaning mine today (I left it out hoping for a late straggler).

You should be proud of yourself - but did you measure to make sure the car will fit inside and you can still open the doors?

    Hi claire,

Yes, day 4. Last Sunday was a bit of a flase start, I got some stuff done but not enough. Tuesday I was going great guns until the shelf fell from the wall. Today I made great progress and tomorrow I should finish with the garden side of the garage, car and all. Then I have the 'other' side of the garage, where other 'stuff' is kept...bikes, long handle tools, rakes, coolers, etc. It's just a good thing that we have such a large garage. The down side of a large garage...lots of stuff.

I had a tagsale in my garage last weekend and it's still setup! I don't want to go in there now and box everything up! I know it won't take long but I can't seem to get started!

I hear ya, javaandjazz. It's so much easier to keep that door closed.

I'm still working on my garage, but your notes have motivated me to get going. This was last weekend's major task... every pot washed in soap and bleach in the driveway. I have since gathered about a dozen more pots that I missed first go around.

wendyb, yep...isn't that always the way. You finish with your task at hand only to find out that you really have not finished your task at all. You wash all of your pots with soap and bleach? Good for you! I just dump the dirt out of the pots into a big tub which I then stow under my work table. In the spring I will spray out and clean up all the pots before I refill them.

And guess what. TODAY is yet ANOTHER day to work in the garage. Yippie-Skippie! I better get going. Good luck to you!

who is always so full of energy and promise on Saturday morning...

I've been away since mid September, and just ventured into the garage for the first time in a very long while. The grass is really tall - my DH is on crutches with a damaged knee, and hasn't mowed since I left. Found the lawn mower, but the gas can was nowhere in sight, so I decided the mowing would just have to wait for spring.

There are things in there that are so hard to reach that it's become impossible - we never took the kayaks out this year because it was just to hard to figure out how to get them off their racks. I spent about 15 minutes this morning, looking for a likely area to store my collection of clay pots, and gave up. Maybe next week ...

I don't mind sharing a home with DH, but I sure wish I had my own garage. It wouldn't occur to me to put a car in there, but I could easily fill a full-sized garage with my garden gear.

Whew...what a job! I need a rest and some lunch. I have been working for 4 hours and my side of the garage is almost finished. It looks great!

digging...welcome back. Sorry to hear about your husbands knee and your grass. I went to our garden plot over at the community garden yesterday and was surprised to see how the weeds have grown since our veggie growing season ended. I saw those weeds, saw how several other garden plots looked clean and weed free and decided that I would not worry about it until spring, just like your grass.

who is very happy with all she has accomplished so far but, her energy of Saturday morning is starting to wane...

Digging, I hope your husband's knee is better soon.

My garage has basically been a garden shed for the past ten years or so.

My husband has been rather suddenly transferred to PA, and the hardest part of packing, for me, has been the garage since every pot, every tool (no matter how old or rusted) holds so many memories.

The first snow storm of winter, when the cars had to be put in the garage so that the driveway could be plowed, have caused me to become a wild woman, doing everything in my power to perform the magic required to turn the garden shed back into a garage.

    But, then comes the spring......

"...to turn the garden shed back into a garage..."

LOL, Molly, that is how I view my garage too. In the dozen years we've lived here, we have never parked our cars in the garage. We don't have automatic openers, so if you had to park the car, get out and unlock the garage door, open it, get back in the car, re-start it, and drive it in.... well, then, it was just easier to leave the car parked in front of the garage.

And since we never parked in there, well, things inside just kind of took over the space.

I tell everyone I'm the only person I know who has such a big potting shed - two storeys, no less, lol!

Sooey, I've thought of you often as the annual oh-my-goodness-I-just-HAVE-to-clean-out-the-garage panic sets in. I've been trying to get some inspiration from you, but only seem to conjure up sighing envy, lol.

And yesterday, when I hauled open one of the garage doors, a pile of cocoa hull mulch just spilled out on my feet, lol. Seems the squirrels found one of the bags I had tossed just inside, and made a nice hole in it. I guess the garage door was the only thing holding the mulch up and when I opened it... Couldn't even close the door all the way, lol.

I know what I'm doing this morning....

**sigh** The work in the garage goes on. What is this...about day a million? I jest, it's only day six for me. I have gotten to places and corners in that garage that have not seen the light of day for several years. I even got the cord wood/scrap wood pile organized a bit. Today we will be reorganizing 'stuff' between the garage and the basement. Lets call it 'stuff shifting'. That will be a big help.

digger...look on the bright side of all that cocoa mulch on the floor of your garage...the smell must be great!

mollyj...good luck with the move to PA. And take it from me, there is life after CT.
