I envy you the witch hazel. Is it our native one, or one of the newer named varieties?

Probably for me it will be daffodils and forsythia. I noted they bloomed by March 9 last year.

Crocus, daffodils and tulips. I don't really care for bulbs but have to have something to remind that spring and summer really are going to happen!

I don't have witch hazel and I've never seen one blooming in person, just photos. Their flowers look squishy, like a mushroom type growth or something. Do they have a weird texture?

You reminded me that I need to check my helebores and see what they're doing. They bloom almost TOO early. I'm not out in the yard much in late winter and their blooms aren't really showy enough to enjoy from a distance. Daffodils are the harbingers of spring for me.

This is from early March 09. It is an Arnolds Promise Witchhazel. Talk about slow growing, it grows about 2 inches a year.

I tried witch hazel before twice and lost it. I'm always after fragrance. I've read that the native one grows by creeks so I probably let it die in summer from lack of water. I have my best luck with things like that if I use the barn roof drips to help. That area is full. My earliest will be winter honeysuckle which blooms with a nice fragrance repeatedly in the warm spells. It is kind of a ratty looking bush, but I like it.
