Wow Bradley, I can't believe no one has answered you. I think you should avoid mowing but if you do mow, definitely set the lawnmower on its highest level.

Check the FAQ about the cornmeal, there's alot of information about that there.

Your mowing frequency my be reduced during a drought, but you should still mow at the Highest setting with a Sharp blade. Be careful not to remove more than 1/3 of the top of the leaf blade at any one mowing because this will place further stress on the grass.

Also, postpone or reduce fertilizer applications. Fertilizer will only place further stress on the lawn and my affect recovery.

Corn Meal acts as a Mild fertilizer and also a natural fungicide. It would be very safe to use in your current situation @ 10-20lbs per 1000sqft. You could apply this rate every 30-60 days.

Subject to my wife's objections, I have stopped mowing in this heat. This heat is unusual even for us. Normally we get moist winds from the gulf but these are dry winds from everywhere else. We are limited to watering one time per week. We can water an unlimited amount from 8-10pm and 3-8am, one day per week. My day was Tuesday. I'm going to get more Sears Craftsman hoses and oscillating sprinklers this week.

Compost would be good to apply now if that's in your budget. No more than 1 cubic yard per 1,000 square feet. Sweep it down with a broom or drag a piece of chain link over the yard after you get it more or less scattered around. You can probably get Dillo-Dirt compost from Dromgoole's nursery. The idea of the drag is to lift all the grass out of the compost so the compost will sift down to the soil. Otherwise St Aug will smother easily under compost.

When you mow the next time you're going to have to ignore the 1/3 rule. I do that all the time with no apparent problems. I mow from 9 inches down to 4.
