wrong again/weather

sigh, so much for just one little line coming across the state as the weather man said yesterday.

I did get lucky and finished up mowing 30 minutes before we got light mist this afternoon, which grew heaver throughout the day..

I just checked the rain gage, 1 inch, a little rain would have been good, but this time of year, we did not need the 1 inch, I just got my bog dried up, only for it to fill back up today.

I just hope my tomatoes are not floating around

I doubt that anyone in Grove will be planting this month. My garden was still muddy and we have had heavy, heavy rain tonight. It is almost 11 PM and still raining. We also have rain forecast for all next week. I am glad that I have a few tomatoes in pots because it isn't likely I will get any into the ground for a long while. As far as temps go, tomorrow is supposed to go to 41 then it should warm up.

We had intermittent light mist throughout the day....just heavy enough to make it impossible to do anything, unless you like being a little wet. The intermittent mist wasn't in our forecast.

For us, there was only one real storm though, and it hit our part of Love County around 7:45 or 8:00 p.m., so we lost computer service and satellite TV during the heavy part of the rain, which didn't last long. DH called from D-FW Airport shortly before the rain hit to tell me that it looked on radar like it would miss us. LOL It didn't.

I think some of the more northwestern parts of Love County may have had several brief waves of showers come across before we got our rain here at the southern end of the county, at least from what I heard on the scanner. It also is in the mid-40s here right now, which is a tiny bit cooler than we were expecting.

Looking good for the weekend, though, with highs in the 80s, although it will be in the mid-40s again early tomorrow morning.

At least the rain isn't falling as heavily here as it did last year, but it is falling on more days. Every time we start to dry out, it rains. I don't think we're as wet here as Kirts is just a couple of counties away, and I KNOW we're not as wet as Carol is in Grove.

And, the nights are just cool enough that I haven't been scared by a snake yet, even though one of my neighbors has been battling rattlesnakes for weeks. This is the latest in the year that I've ever managed to make it, I think, without the "first poisonous snake encounter" of the season. That's a good thing.

Dawn we didn't have that mist all day that you had. Not at all. I even went out and watered around 4:30 or so because I had a gut feeling we were not going to get much rain.

We finally did get some last night...not sure what time but it came and went pretty fast. Perhaps between 7 and 8. Only one loud clap of thunder. I have not been out to check rain gauges but I suspect it will only be a trace of rain.

I saw on the radar how much rain and storms were in the eastern parts of OK though. Especially the NE part! Oh my!

We seem to be in some sort of protected area where a lot of the rain goes around us..to the south or north. It is strange.

We were dry and needed a good rain at my house. Sorry that some of you are too wet. As we said after last years floods..I think I would rather have to water myself than to have a lake for a yard or a bog for a garden.

Yes, more rain. Just what we needed (NOT) eh?

My tomato plants are all still inside along with the Bell Peppers, Cucumber, Squash, Watermelon and Basil I have coming along in pots. They'll probably be inside till the end of the month the way things are going too.

I have around 30 tomato plants that I'll be giving away to friends and neighbours next week. It's always a bit sad, kinda like giving kittens or pups away.

Carol, I have my very own Grand Lake down the bottom of the garden. :-)

Mick - I bet you do have your own lake today. I can hear my plumbing gurgle when I flush so that is not a good sign. Our neighborhood boat dock has had the road closed to it for quite awhile now and I am sure it is worse today.

I went to a friends house last Sunday for lunch and I thought it would be a little easier to back out and go in the other direction because I had a car parked behind me. I went a block and had a choice, turn around and go back the way I came in or drive through lake water. She has a road going north from her house, and another west and both were underwater. All of the neighbors had only one way in. One of the roads went through a very low spot and the top of the fence was underwater. My husband said he could tie his sail boat to her trees this week and didn't need a dock. In comparison to the lake, I am in a safe area because I am on a ridge, but my lots don't drain very well because of the way the road is built. We have ours where it drains a little better now, but my neighbors ground water puddles near our property line and it is too near our lateral lines. If he had a way to take his ground water across the road, it would solve a lot of my problem.

I think our Church group was planning to clean Grove Springs Park on Saturday, but we would need scuba gear for that job now. I think you could stand in the road behind McDonalds and fish.

I think your tree is going to need a gradual "face lift". It is weird since the trunk appears to be fairly straight for the first 3 or 4 feet. I think willow trees are lovely but I will never plant one. I had one in Ohio that had a canopy that covered almost my entire back yard. In the fall, instead of sheding leaves, it would shed limbs. My children and I picked up limbs until we were sick of it. From that house, we bought a house in southern Oklahoma that had one in the front yard. The house also had a history of serious plumbing problems. When we dug up the lines to find the problem, the plumbing pipe was "totally" filled with willow roots. They went through the pipe and into the septic tank which was quite a distance. Needless to say, we cut the beautiful willow tree. The contractor who owned the backhoe told us he thought everyone should plant one. He said it kept him in business.

I think I can forget getting any plants in the ground until May since we will have rain again next week. I have a "very few" potatoes, some onions and leeks, 10-12 broccoli plants, and a nice sugar snap pea crop planted. I have five "experimental" tomato plants in Wall-O-water.
I wanted to see if they would survive our cold if put in the garden early. I also want to see if the plants benefit from being planted in the garden very early vs. those of the same age that have gone through several re-pots and have good root systems.

A few years ago, I bought two large transplants and put them in WOWs and had two tomatoes on the 3rd of June. It is a good way to get early tomatoes if you are willing to go to the trouble of giving a little additional covering on the very cold nights. I am not expecting early tomatoes this year because these little plants were too small when they went in the ground. In the future I plan to plant my early ones in pots and just drag them in on cold nights (Thanks Dawn). I have almost a dozen plants in pots now and they are looking good but they are still small plants. In the future I will buy a couple of the earliest large transplants I see and see if it is worth the trouble.

My husband went to senior citizens center in Jay yesterday and they were asking him about my plants this year. He asked one of the ladies what kind of tomato plants she was planting this year. She responded, "What ever Carol has leftover after she gets hers planted." Guess we have a tradition here with the extra seedlings. LOL I hope they aren't disappointed because I am adding container growing this year so I will be using more of them than usual.

Actually, I am glad to give them whatever I don't plant. Some of them are so cute about it. Some don't have gardens, but they have flower beds.

I am just not comfortable with the temps today. It shows we are going to be about 41 tonight, but it just feels cold to me today. We pulled the seedlings back under the shed and I have some pots ready to throw over the heads of the container plants if they decide to change the forecast. Maybe the dampness just makes me feel cold today. The garden things will just have to make it, regardless, because it is too wet to get in there.

I want warm weather. It is hard to look at all of the Texas, Georgia, and Florida plants on-line and not be able to plant, isn't it?

We had misty rain for most of the day yesterday. Enough to make everything wet. About 9 pm last night, lightening struck a transformer right by us and then we had a huge rumble of thunder and it poured rain for about 40 minutes and moved on. It finally cleared off good here about 10 or 11 am this morning. We are supposed to be dry at least a couple of days. Hoping to plant the veggie garden this weekend. Keeping fingers crossed.

Our rain only amounted to about a half-inch in the gauge, and the ground soaked it up like a sponge. Still, it kept me from having to water the seedlings in my garden.

I feel sorry for those of you who have received such an excess of rain. We had that last year, but not this year (yet).

I worked in the garden all afternoon, and the soil was surprisingly dry considering a half-inch of rain fell last night. It was only about 68 or 70 degrees today, but I think this weekend it will be in the 80s!

The only "bad" thing today was the mosquitoes.
