To compost or not to compost ...

I know adding compost to the lawn is highly recommended to restore lost microbial activity (do i have that right?). But a few weeks back, i applied Corn Gluten Meal, and i'm already noticing a difference in the grass. Have i simply fed the grass alone, or could it be that the cgm has already sort of "activated" what little microbes might have been there, and they're multiplying even without the addition of compost?

It's not that i don't intend to eventually apply compost. I'm just trying to prioritize my many gardening projects ....
