Since this is the Organic Lawn Care Forum, I assume your lawn maintenance is primarily organic. That being the case then, fertilizing with SBM would be fine, as your soil is already good. Alfalfa pellets may have more Phosphorus and Potassium. If you are not 100 % orthodox organic gardener, then maybe you would want to consider a little starter fertilizer for your over-seeding project. Me, I would just throw down the seed, some compost, rabbit food, and water well until established.

I agree with Bill...put out some alfalfa pellets (rabbit food)

Put down alfalfa pellets 2 to 3 wks before you sow your seeds. The seeds themselves have everything they need to germinate & the alfalfa put out 2 to 3 wks before will make the nutrients available right when the new seedlings will be needing them. I suggest using alfalfa pellets because they offer nutrients and a high availability of trace minerals. They contain trianconatol, a natural fatty-acid growth stimulant, which will help the seedling's roots. Apply at 20lbs per 1000sqft.

Trouble is, there are rabbits roaming through my neighborhood. While so far they haven't molested my garden, I'd worry that putting down RABBIT FOOD would invite them to set up shop permanently.

Don't worry. Since you will be watering the area frequently, the alfalfa pellets will turn to mush and nothing but the microbes will eat it.
