That is a great strategy. With those soil temps, organic feeding in mid October is perfect. IÂll be doing the same.

Seldom do my soil temperatures around here fall into the 40's even by Thanksgiving. It takes a lot of cold, damp weather to drop soil temperatures that far, that fast, and even with the normal cloud cover our weather here is pretty warm that late. I have fed the soil around here the week of Thanksgiving many years with good organic lawn foods with no problem, because the grass is most often still growing then. There have been years when we have had snow on the ground then and that did limit my ability to spread lawn food, but not because of too cold soil temperatures.

I live in MA and the grass usually stops growing in early November.

I started my fall feedings with milorganite at 10 lbs/1000 ft^2 in early August. I've applied soybean meal @ 7.5 lbs/1000 ft^2 the first week of September and this weekend.

I plan on applying 10 lb/1000 ft^2 of soybean at the end of the month and another 10 lbs/1000 ft^2 of milorganite in mid October. If the lawn is still growing by halloween I will apply milorganite or soybean at the rates above.

Many will say that you need to apply urea once lawn growth ceases to get a deep green through early winter and spring, but with the approach above I seem to get excellent results.

Cryophile microbes need food too.

The idea is to promote root growth before the cold weather sends everything dormant for winter. six weeks before your first anticipated freeze should help. Here's a link to a basic article about Fall fertilizing.

Contrary to what a few people seem to believe Urea is not an acceptable product for an organic gardener/farmer to use. Just looking at the number should convince anyone of that.
