Of course you could, but it's not a complete fertilizer.

What else do you have readily available?

Alfalfa 3-1-2 is the most "complete" organic fertilizer. However, both P and K tend to persist in soil. The focus should be on N or simply feeding the soil with protein.

Seems like I've read on the back of a Milorganite bag that you're not supposed to put down a month before freezing.

Actually, the Milorganite folks say that you should apply the stuff late fall, in what they call "dormant feeding."

Subywu, I agree with your post. I phoned the Milorganite folks last year and questioned why they recommend a late fall feeding with Milorganite. The person answering the phone consulted with another individual and the response was that the nutrients in Milorganite would be available in the Spring as soon as the soil was warm enough. This occurs at about 50F. Many of us know that the same is true for most organic fertilizers.
