It's mostly a surfactant/wetting agent that helps water penetrate deeper and there's also some enzymes. It's sort of a home made version of the liquid aerators that some places sell.

The soap, the shampoo, lessens the surface tension of the water so it will penetrate the soil easier, but it does nothing long term to correct soil problems. The rest of whats in there does little or nothing for the soil unless you have adequate reserves of organic matter in your soil and then you would not need to apply something like this because the reason for applying this would not exist in a soil with adequate levels of organic matter.

The best ones work to stimulate biology in the soil, good soil must have organic matter and active bacteria, fungi and protozoa along with many other things. My experience is that there is no "miracle cure", but, whatever you are trying should contain some biology or you are wasting time and money.
