i'm a bit further south than you, but i think about anything grows here. since its a bit late to start seeds, you might want to start with plants this year--or, you could tuck a few tomato seeds in the ground for later tomatoes,-- beans, cucumbers, all grow from seeds,-- onions, i put in sets and plants, what all are you wanting to grow?

thanks so much for your reply! I'd love to grow some tomatos, lettuce (romaine or arugula?), onions would be GREAT, herbs, definately peppers... oh boy, the possibilities! I'd also love to mix some pretty flowers onto another section of my garden bed..

Can you give me some specific suggestions??

If I lived in St. Louis, I would go to the wonderful botanical garden every week. You could get a membership and get a cheaper rate, I think. They have a home garden section where they try out various bedding plants and compare lawn grasses - a demonstration garden for homeowners.

Hi Steph! Welcome to Missouri. Your idea of a salid garden is a great way to start. Sew lettus seeds now. Onion sets for green onion now. Radish seeds now. Tomato and pepper plants after the first of May. Sew some merrygold and zinnia seeds for sure fire easy flowers. After your lettus gos by plant some green bean seed in it's place for a late summer crop. My advice is, keep it simple at first, to insure success. Remember to keep the weeds out and be sure to water during the hot and dry summer. About an inch of water a week. Good luck, and let us all know how things are progressing. Russ.

Can anyone tell me where to get the old onions we called multiplying onions back in Texas? I last had them in the early 80s. They look a bit like green onions, but when you pick them you separate one from the bunch and put it back in the garden and another bunch grows from it. So you never have to start over. Anyone heard of them? Know where I can get some?

also called "traveling onions" most fall catalogs have them, try looking under winter onions. the tops make little onions, that bend over and take root.. i think territoral seeds is where i ordered.

Was it Egyptian Walking onions? My son takes a knife out and just cuts them off at the top of the ground and lets them grow back where they are. Yep, they do walk about the garden if you let them.
