It's always best to root in a potting mix. The developing roots require oxygen equally as much as nutrients and water. It will also transplant better.

I think it's Aunt Gertie's (?) How could I forget -- I once had a car named Gertie.

Well, heck. It's Aunt Ruby's, after all. Duh.

I cut it down to the top of the old container and buried the stem in Jiffy Mix in a deep McDonald's drink cup. It's "up to its eyeballs" in mix with a baggie on top in my kitchen window. This has been a real learning experience for me. It's good to know there is hope after they get too tall.

A potting mix like Jiffy Mix is fine. Straight perlite doesn't have nutrients. Pull off some leaves to free up some nodes along the stem to insert below the soil line. Leave leaves at the top.
